3D-Printed Homes Rise with Near-Zero Carbon Cement

A groundbreaking development has popped up in the sustainable construction domain. Eco Material Technologies and Hive 3D have unveiled the first 3D-printed homes built using near-zero carbon cement. These 400-900 sq. ft. homes, which are part of The Casitas @ The Halles housing project, are built using PozzoCEM Vite®, a durable, longer-lasting cement from Eco Technologies. Compared to traditional Portland cement, it has 92% lower emissions and sets much faster.

Hive 3D and Eco Material Technologies have collaborated to develop a system that combines Eco Material’s cement alternatives with local aggregates on the construction site using modified commercial mixing equipment. This innovative approach not only offers environmental benefits but also enables Hive 3D to produce affordable printable material. As a result, they can construct houses at a significantly lower cost compared to traditional methods.

Grant Quasha, CEO of Eco Material Technologies said “Hive 3D’s commitment to building the first 100% cement replacement 3-D printed homes aligns with our goal of transitioning the construction industry away from using materials that generate approximately 8% of the world’s carbon emissions each year. While we are known as the largest supplier of sustainable cement alternatives for large-scale infrastructure projects, we are proud to be able to work with forward-thinking innovators like the team at Hive 3D to provide residential solutions as well. These homes are cost-efficient, beautiful and sustainable in many senses of the word.”

“We are beyond excited to work with Eco Material Technologies, Starred Sky Development, and CyBe Construction on this new project,” added Timothy Lankau, CEO of Hive 3D. “These small homes will serve as a model for affordable and eco-friendly housing throughout the country. We plan to build them at a speed and cost point that is unprecedented in the affordable housing space.”

3D-printed homes and other innovative solutions

Creating affordable, climate-resilient, and energy-efficient housing is the need of the hour. Embracing innovative practices, such as using low-carbon cement alternatives, implementing new technologies that emit less carbon, and regenerative designs, can significantly contribute to achieving net zero. It’s a collaborative effort that will need everyone involved in the construction industry to do their part!

This near-zero carbon cement aligns perfectly with the UN’s request to the cement and concrete industry, urging them to implement essential measures in reducing carbon emissions.

A lot of it will come down to how we design our living and workspaces. We can say the future of design is poised for remarkable advancements with the integration of innovative building solutions such as prefab construction, 3D-printed homes, and advanced design tools. Cutting-edge technologies and approaches are reshaping the way homes are envisioned, planned, and constructed.

By implementing smart design strategies, firms can unlock a myriad of possibilities in sustainable construction. A holistic approach that shows the capabilities of human imagination and modern technology, will enable firms to create environments that foster well-being and productivity.

Artificial Intelligence, machine learning algorithms, sensor systems, and data analytics, can be used to build smart structures. By embracing smart design, firms can create spaces that not only meet the evolving demands of the modern world but also contribute to a more sustainable and interconnected future.
