Benefits of 3D Printed Architectural Models

Imagine having a meeting with an investor who just can’t visualize the project plans you’re showing him. The 3D AutoCAD or BIM models can be impressive on screen because they show depth and detail, and can be viewed from various angles, but some people need more. What if you could show a model of your project that could be held and touched? With 3D printing technology, you can create 3D architectural models in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional models.

Architects and real estate developers have been quick to adopt 3D technology in their project plans. They know the benefits of having a reproduction of their building or other design venture when they are pitching the idea to investors, or explaining their concept to current stakeholders. The downside has always been the time and cost involved.

In the past architectural models had to be painstakingly created piece by piece. It took a lot of time, and a skilled worker to do it. With 3D printing, production time is decreased and doesn’t require someone with specialized skills. You can still create a detailed model of your building or infrastructure, but it’s much easier and has a faster turnaround. Months and months of building a model from hand carved, hand painted pieces can be replaced with a turnaround of two to three weeks.

3D printing of architectural models is also cheaper. A hand crafted model can cost over $20,000, but one that was printed using 3D technology is about a quarter of that price tag.

When you want to get a realistic feel for how a building or other project will look before any construction begins, you can see it with a 3D printed model. You can add elements such as landscaping and traffic flow, plus include an overview of surrounding buildings, parking lots or other infrastructure. 3D printing isn’t limited to straight lines, either. Curved walls and rounded roofs can be printed.

The models can also be printed in full color. Old models had to be painted by hand, which is a time consuming and painstaking process.

Architectural models printed using 3D technology can be made of different materials, including resin, plastic and sandstone. Traditional models were made of thin balsa wood, which could be easily damaged when transported.

3D printed architectural models are often used by architects and real estate developers of residential, commercial and institutional buildings. Anyone with a desire to see their project in “real life” can benefit from using 3D printing technology to create it.

Advances are still being made in this technology thanks to 3D CAD services. These will inevitably have an impact on how 3D printed architectural models are created. Time could be reduced even more, costs could be significantly less, and more options could be added. In the future printing a 3D version of your digital based projects could be as simple as pressing a button.
