Career Tips for Mechanical Engineers

Mentor – This is an extremely important part of the overall journey one will take in becoming a mechanical engineer. Having a role model that is experienced and willing to help you when you’re faced with an issue or have a question is key. Most industries recommend this and mechanical engineering is no different. You’ll want to find a mentor that pushes you to do better and inspires you to be a better engineer.

Management – You’ll build a great deal of skills with experience, but one of the most important ones to learn right away is that of management. Learning to manage people will help you throughout your career. Even in the beginning stages of your career, you might have a group of people to work with. Someone will have to take on the role of manager. Why shouldn’t that person be you? If you’re worried about jumping in and trying to manage, don’t. Your mentor can help you through. Trust your instincts and rely on the senior engineer to answer any questions you might have.

Questions – You’ve probably heard that the only “stupid” question is one that is never asked. You may also remember the saying “it’s better to remain silent than to be thought a fool”. For engineers, never be afraid to ask questions. You’ll be able to better consider all options when multiple questions are asked. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and inquire anytime you feel the need. You’ll grow into a great engineer while doing so.

Learn – Never stop learning. If you take one thing from this article, we hope this is it. Learning opens the mind and strengthens our abilities. In order to be successful and have a long, healthy career, keep learning. Don’t stop with your diploma. Take continuing education classes and if you’re interested, work towards a Masters or MBA.

Discipline – Don’t be afraid to implement discipline in yourself as well as others. According to ecnmag.com, “Innovation in engineering can often come from unexpected quarters. While the trend toward specialization is not likely to let up, the need for cross-pollination of engineering disciplines is critical.” Stay up-to-date and ready for anything.

Good luck with your venture into this career.
