Recently, Skanska, a renowned construction firm, won the 2023 Digital Construction Award in the Delivering Net Zero with Digital Innovation category – sponsored by Sir Robert McAlpine. They developed a 5D+ BIM (Building Information Modeling) tool that will help them achieve net-zero carbon emissions in projects and supply chain operations by 2045.

Skanska’s tool enables it to collect and calculate information about carbon emissions, which is then fed to existing 3D models. By integrating the carbon data with the 3D models, Skanska can have a comprehensive view of both the project details and its carbon impact. The 5D+ BIM process has improved construction efficiency, resulting in up to 17% reduction in project carbon emissions. It also allows Skanska to monitor carbon emissions based on design and cost, establishing a strong data foundation for future artificial intelligence and machine learning use. This technology enables Skanska to provide clients with valuable insights for making informed decisions on carbon reduction in future projects.

Upon receiving the award, Skanska UK’s Goulielmos Floros, a graduate of digital solutions and data specialist, and estimator Daniel Shaw said (via BIM+), “What was unique about our project was the strategy: we used our in-house knowledge to create an in-house tool utilizing all of Skanska’s intelligence and expertise to create a system that can help the industry become net zero.”
