Digital Innovation and the Path to a Carbon-Neutral Future

Recently, Skanska, a renowned construction firm, won the 2023 Digital Construction Award in the Delivering Net Zero with Digital Innovation category – sponsored by Sir Robert McAlpine. They developed a 5D+ BIM (Building Information Modeling) tool that will help them achieve net-zero carbon emissions in projects and supply chain operations by 2045.

Skanska’s tool enables it to collect and calculate information about carbon emissions, which is then fed to existing 3D models. By integrating the carbon data with the 3D models, Skanska can have a comprehensive view of both the project details and its carbon impact. The 5D+ BIM process has improved construction efficiency, resulting in up to 17% reduction in project carbon emissions. It also allows Skanska to monitor carbon emissions based on design and cost, establishing a strong data foundation for future artificial intelligence and machine learning use. This technology enables Skanska to provide clients with valuable insights for making informed decisions on carbon reduction in future projects.

Upon receiving the award, Skanska UK’s Goulielmos Floros, a graduate of digital solutions and data specialist, and estimator Daniel Shaw said (via BIM+), “What was unique about our project was the strategy: we used our in-house knowledge to create an in-house tool utilizing all of Skanska’s intelligence and expertise to create a system that can help the industry become net zero.”

Skanska beat 5 other entries to win the prestigious award. This remarkable feat showcases the firm’s commitment to sustainability and highlights the transformative power of digital innovation in revolutionizing the construction industry’s approach to environmental stewardship.

Digital Innovation Drives Sustainability

Digital innovation has a crucial role to play in making not just construction, but every aspect of the AEC industry sustainable. Cutting-edge technologies and digital tools will allow firms worldwide to enhance their sustainability efforts. From advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence to building information modeling (BIM), digital innovation provides new avenues for optimizing energy efficiency, reducing waste, and identifying carbon reduction opportunities.

The pursuit of net-zero emissions requires a holistic and integrated approach, where digital innovation catalyzes transformative change. It enables firms to let go of traditional processes for new ones, drive operational efficiencies, and unlock new opportunities for sustainable practices. Furthermore, these tools facilitate collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective action across sectors.

The efforts aren’t limited to a single approach; net zero initiatives encompass various strategies, including utilizing renewable energy sources, adopting electric vehicles (EVs) for the transportation of labor and materials, and exploring innovative methods for carbon capture and storage.

  • Renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, will significantly decrease reliance on fossil fuels, which will further mitigate carbon footprint.
  • Integrating electric vehicles into transportation systems contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting cleaner and more efficient mobility.
  • Developments in carbon capture techniques will also play a vital role in actively mitigating the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment.

These combined efforts reflect global demand for sustainable construction and promote a holistic approach to making build environments greener. As digital technologies continue to evolve and mature, they offer immense potential to unlock solutions for the challenges posed by climate change, making net-zero emissions a realistic and achievable objective.
