Power of Carbon Accounting in Building Design and Beyond

In the quest to decarbonize construction, it’s crucial to assess carbon emissions from all stages. Here, life carbon accounting comes into play. Simply put, life carbon accounting considers the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a structure throughout its entire lifecycle, from the design stage to completion.

Carbon accounting reveals the true environmental impact of buildings. By quantifying the embodied carbon in materials, evaluating operational emissions, and considering end-of-life factors, we can uncover the true carbon footprint of the structure, identify opportunities for emission reductions, prioritize sustainable design choices, and make informed decisions toward a low-carbon future.

There are different methods and tools available for life carbon accounting. They provide invaluable insights to guide environmentally responsible decision-making. Let’s look at some of them-

Tools and Methods for Carbon Accounting

There’s a range of approaches that enable a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of buildings and products.

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): LCA is a widely recognized method for evaluating the environmental impact of a building. Everything from raw material extraction, transportation, and waste generation is considered here.
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM): BIM enables architects, engineers, and construction professionals to create a virtual representation of a building. As design, construction, and operational data are integrated within the 3D model, it allows for easier analysis of energy performance and carbon emissions.
  • Carbon Calculators: Carbon calculators are user-friendly tools that individuals and firms can use to track carbon emissions. Typically, factors such as energy usage, mode of transportation, and waste generation are considered.
  • Software and Digital Platforms: Numerous software tools and digital platforms are available that facilitate life carbon accounting. For example, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)have developed a Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) system for the measurement and evaluation of carbon emissions from the start of the project to its completion. By performing assessments early in the design stage, itself, they can make informed decisions on selecting low-carbon materials, decarbonizing methods, and energy-efficient systems to minimize carbon emissions.
  • Sustainability Rating Certifications: These Carbon calculators provide frameworks and guidelines for assessing the sustainability performance of buildings. Various factors such as energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and materials used, are considered.

There are several such certifications that construction firms can acquire-

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
  • BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)
  • WELL Building Standard
  • Green Star
  • EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies)
  • TRUE (Total Resource Usage and Efficiency)

They encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly principles and construction practices, ultimately leading to reduced carbon emissions.

Design professionals, architects, and engineers can collaborate and use these tools to optimize their efforts in getting a comprehensive understanding of the carbon footprint of a construction project by getting precise data and analyzing the carbon impact of various design choices. This collaborative approach empowers them to prioritize sustainability, identify opportunities for carbon reduction, and implement innovative solutions to minimize the environmental impact of the built environment.

Examples that Highlight the Application of Carbon Accounting

We already have examples of projects in which carbon accounting was implemented. By strategically selecting low-carbon materials, optimizing energy efficiency, and integrating renewable energy systems, these structures have achieved remarkable carbon reductions. Let’s look at some examples-

  • Bullit Center, Seattle: With elements like solar panels and efficient lighting systems, the Bullit Center reduces its reliance on fossil fuels, thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions.
  • Barangaroo South, Sydney: It’s Australia’s first carbon-neutral precinct. To reduce carbon emissions, Lendlease, the company behind this project, followed three strategies-
    • Improve building design, enhance infrastructure efficiency, and promote education and behavioral initiatives
    • Implement low carbon and renewable energy sources both on and off-site
    • Turning to carbon offsets and using them to compensate for emissions
  • Microsoft’s upcoming Data CenterWisconsin: Microsoft plans on building a new data center at Mount Pleasant. To eliminate emission scopes, they will use low-carbon materials, sustainable traveling, and data-driven decision-making to track embodied carbon.

Life carbon accounting is crucial for understanding and reducing the carbon footprint of construction projects. It enables informed decision-making and contributes to a greener built environment. Design plays a crucial role in this whole scenario. Architects and designers, with modern-day tools, have the power to make sustainable design choices and track the project’s impact on the environment.

We can pave the way for a more sustainable future, one where carbon emissions are significantly reduced, and our built environment plays a positive role in mitigating climate change.
