Types of 3D Printers for CAD Drafting Companies

Types of 3D Printers for CAD Drafting Companies

3D printers have amazing capabilities that you can take advantage of, right in your own home or place of business. These new machines are especially helpful with prototyping at specialized CAD drafting companies. With the technology of 3D printers increasing every day, they’re now able to build musical instruments, smart phone cases, figurines and more. The possibilities when using a 3D printer are virtually endless. Those that are considering purchasing a 3D printer to use at home, or for business purposes, must first gain a bit of knowledge regarding the types of 3D printers. There are many different variations among 3D printers on the market and it’s important to choose the one that’s right for your needs.

Below, you’ll find all you need to know about the different types of 3D printers so that you’ll be able to purchase the best one to fit your needs.

Types of 3D printers

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) – Items are created by manipulating plastic. FDM uses a process that heats and extrudes the plastic and then pieces it together in layers to create an object. This type of printer is the most used and easiest to find.

Stereolithography – More expensive than an FDM 3D printer, stereolithography is used for high quality printouts. The process involves an ultraviolet light beam, used to harden a model from photosensitive liquids pooled within the printer.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) – More expensive than FDM printers, SLS is very similar to stereolithography. The SLS process uses a laser that melts powder to create layer upon layer of the printed object. An SLS also has the ability to print with metal. FDM and stereolithography does not offer this option.

In addition to purchasing one of the 3D printers mentioned above, you also have the option to make your own 3D printer. Building kits and instructions are available for purchase should you choose to go the DIY route. If you’re able to build your own, it’s often a more cost efficient option than purchasing an pre-assembled one.

No matter which type of printer you choose, 3D printing will offer nothing but beneficial advantages for you, whether you use it at home or for business purposes!
