Zikzak Architects’ Vision for Ukraine’s First Ronald McDonald House

In war-torn Ukraine, the Ronald McDonald House program aims to provide a sanctuary for seriously ill children and their families. Zikzak Architects have unveiled the design for the country’s first Ronald McDonald House, situated on the premises of OHMATDYT Children’s hospital. The house will be finished by Q3 2025.

With almost 400 similar projects worldwide, the Ronald McDonald House program aims to keep families together and alleviate emotional and financial stress while children receive critical medical care. The one in Ukraine will include a range of features designed to provide comfort and support to these families during their difficult times. Let’s take a look.

Ronald McDonald House in Ukraine

This Ronald McDonald House will be a 3,500-square-meter building with a reinforced concrete frame, ceramic block walls, and a clinker tile and brick facade. Its design adheres to the architectural style of the surrounding buildings. Its primary color complements the existing structures and pastel shades harmonize with the historic facades and street view. The window niches blend old and new styles, creating a rhythm in the façade. Colorful windowsills add playfulness and uniqueness to the building. Furthermore, the rounded cornices of the house mirror that of the adjacent House for Military Families, giving it soft, refined contours.

Rising five stories high, the Ronald McDonald House will have 50 bedrooms, each with its bathroom, offering accommodations for approximately 2,600 children and their families annually. It’s designed to feel like a home, with communal areas on the ground floor and a rooftop terrace for children to play and families to come together.

With their design, Zikzak Architects wants to create a homely atmosphere for young patients, their families, staff, and volunteers. Common areas like the conference hall are designed for warm interactions. It is surrounded by mobile partitions that can be transformed as needed, creating a large, shared space with a kitchen and dining area.

Talking about the house project manager Vasylyna Kosynska said, “We understand how significant this project is and have worked to recreate a homely atmosphere for the children and their families to the maximum extent. In doing so, we have taken into account several complex aspects related to urban planning legislation. Of course, we are honored to be involved in the creation of the Ronald McDonald House in Ukraine.”

Additionally, there will be a foyer, a communal kitchen and dining area, a conference hall, office spaces, a playroom, a relaxation area, a laundry room, and storage rooms. Keeping the current war in mind, Zikzak Architects is building an underground shelter that will house 197 people. It will also include a kitchen, a food storage room, a wardrobe, bathrooms, showers, and technical and storage areas.

The building’s concept considers the creation of a barrier-free environment for people with limited mobility. A specially designed accessible floor is included for families with children with limited mobility.

Reconstruction Efforts in Ukraine

War has had a profound impact on Ukraine, with over 2,000 schools damaged or destroyed. To aid in reconstruction, Team4UA and Denmark’s 3DCP Group are collaborating to use 3D printing technology, specifically COBOD’s BOD2 printer, to build a primary school in Lviv, Ukraine.

In a nation going through challenging times, the Ronald McDonald House becomes a comforting refuge for young patients and their parents, fostering togetherness, hope, love, and care.
