10 Steps to BIM

10 Steps to BIM

Soon, all construction firms in the UK will need to transition to using BIM modeling services for all government construction projects. This new law will go into effect by 2016. While it isn’t yet a requirement for the U.S. it’s expected that our government will follow suit. It’s leaving some firms running a race to get the process implemented as soon as possible.

Even those that aren’t planning to do projects for the government might find that applying BIM into your daily workflow is key in the success of your business. You’ll be amazed by what this process can do for your overall productivity, quality of work and more. Before jumping in and working with BIM, there are several steps that must take place before the system goes live. Below, you’ll find the first five steps to BIM.

Learn the Process. This is the most important step when dealing with BIM. Your team will work better if one or two people get to know the system first, then work with and teach others to do so, as well.

Talk About Changes. Moving to BIM is going to be difficult now, but in the long run, it will be crucial to the company’s success. Identify and talk about the changes that will come with using this process so that they’ll be able to transition well.

Update Technology. While BIM itself is a collaborative process, not a software, it does rely on 3D models. Because of this, the software will be needed to create them. Updating the technology you need to make this possible is key. Also, make sure your hardware is sufficient in power processing and easy to use with the system.

Management Planning. As with all new systems, you’ll need to develop a plan that helps with the change, training and support. Employees will have problems and questions. There should be a protocol set forth to handle this.

Pilot Programming. According to bimhub.com, “If you do dozens of small projects each year, you might consider completing one pilot and capturing lessons learned before running several more pilot projects.”
