Here are the 2023 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers winners

The Architectural League of New York has announced the winners of the 2023 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. This year’s awards recognized architectural and design works that brought comfort amidst the uncomfortable built environment. 

The winners of the 2023 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers are-

  • Miles Gertler from Common Accounts
  • Could Be Design’s Joseph Altshuler and Zack Morrison
  • Sarah Aziz and Lindsey Krug

  • Studio Sean Canty founder Sean Canty

This year’s winners represent a diverse range of projects from around the world, showcasing the creativity and vision of architects and designers who are shaping the future of our cities and communities.

Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann of After Architecture

Architectural League Prize Winners

Katie MacDonald and Kyle Schumann are co-founders of the architecture studio After Architecture, whose work connects modern technology and materials for innovative design. The studio’s projects range from public art installations and exhibitions to residential and commercial buildings.

They have designed the Camp Barker Memorial in Washington D.C. and have worked on several installations across the USA. The two are Assistant Professors of Architecture at the University of Virginia and are involved in several research and academic initiatives. 

Miles Gertler of Common Accounts

Architectural League Prize Winners

Miles Gertler is an architect and co-founder of Common Architects, a multidisciplinary design studio based in Toronto and Madrid. The studio focuses on innovative and sustainable solutions for urban environments. The studio’s work is driven by “driven by an interest in self-design and the human body’s interface with its environment.”

At Common Architects, Gertler has worked on several notable projects, including designing the Going Fluid: Cozy Crusade installation for the Seoul Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea. Common Architects has been awarded The Rome Prize from La Real Academia de Española and has been featured in T Magazine Spain’s 2019 list of influential designers, and Platform Architecture’s 2022 round-up of 40 under 40 European design practices.

Joseph Altshuler and Zack Morrison of Could Be Design

Architectural League Prize Winners

Joseph Altshuler and Zack Morrison are the co-founders of Could Be Design, a Chicago and Urbana-based architecture and design studio that focuses on creating spaces that are engaging and connect with people. 

Their projects include the Esperanza Desk, Free Little Seed Library, and Animate Architect.

Sarah Aziz and Lindsey Krug

Architectural League Prize Winners

Sarah Aziz is a designer based in Albuquerque who researches migration patterns at different levels in our society. Lindsey Krug is a designer based in Chicago and Milwaukee who focuses on how the design of physical spaces contributes to reinforcing social taboos and inequalities related to the body. Their collaboration results in provocative graphics and installations about the often overlooked and everyday things.

The two have together on a project called Dollar Gentle Cycle, which is a pop-up exhibition that displays and distributes products purchased from Dollar General stores

Daisy Ames of Studio Ames

 Daisy Ames of Studio Ames

Daisy Ames is a New York-based architect and the founder of Studio Ames, a design firm that specializes in innovative and sustainable architecture and urban design. At Studio Ames, Ames has worked on a range of projects, from single-family homes to mixed-use buildings and public spaces. 

Her works on prefab modular construction address the need for affordable and sustainable construction practices, and the studio’s Mass Timber Housing is a research project that explores the design and feasibility of micro-unit dwellings. 

Sean Canty of Studio Sean Canty

Sean Canty of Studio Sean Canty

Sean Canty is another New York-based architect and the founder of Studio Sean Canty, a design firm that specializes in architecture, urban design, and cultural projects. At Studio Sean Canty, Canty has worked on a range of projects, from residential and commercial buildings to public spaces. His work is characterized by a focus on sustainability and a commitment to creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically engaging.

Some notable projects include Governors Island Welcome Kiosk, Folly Pavilion which is a structure that uses natural light, and Arena Park Lumen which is another innovative structure that acts as a gathering place to appreciate the city’s surrounds.
