Brewing Innovation: The Coffee-Concrete Connection

Innovation knows no bounds. The most unexpected pairings, like using gaming technology in the AEC industry, yield remarkable results. The latest buzz in the construction industry comes in the form of your morning pick-me-up: coffee. Yes, you read that right! Engineers from RMIT University, Australia, have discovered that using coffee grounds significantly enhances concrete strength.

In their study, published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the team found that turning leftover coffee grounds into biochar using a green, low-energy process at 350 degrees Celsius without oxygen, and mixing it with concrete made it 30% stronger. This process of heating organic waste in the absence of oxygen is known as pyrolysis. The engineers used three different types of coffee grounds which were added to the concrete mix and processed through pyrolysis. The organic components in the coffee broke down and made the concrete much stronger.

The Coffee Paradox!

Concrete, the backbone of modern infrastructure, is used for building everything from towering skyscrapers to sturdy bridges. However, it’s not immune to wear and tear, especially in harsh climates. Researchers have long sought ways to make concrete more resilient, and it seems that the answer was in our morning brew all along!

This research has uncovered a remarkable paradox: while coffee waste appears insignificant, it has the potential to fortify the very foundations of our built environment. It’s an innovative approach that will reduce the environmental burden of coffee waste in landfills and set a precedent for sustainable and innovative solutions in the construction industry.

The lead author of the study, Dr Rajeev Roychand says “The inspiration for our work was to find an innovative way of using the large amounts of coffee waste in construction projects rather than going to landfills — to give coffee a ‘double shot’ at life.”

This study will benefit in various ways-

  • Waste Reduction: It’s an ingenious way to repurpose a common waste product—coffee grounds. By diverting them from landfills and utilizing them in construction, we can significantly reduce their environmental impact.
  • Sustainable Construction: The study paves the way for more sustainable construction practices.
  • Improved Infrastructure: The enhanced strength of coffee-infused concrete means that buildings and infrastructure can withstand greater wear and tear. This leads to longer-lasting structures that require fewer repairs and renovations, ultimately saving both time and money.

Dr. Shannon Kilmartin-Lynch, who is the joint lead author says, “Inspiration for my research, from an Indigenous perspective, involves Caring for Country, ensuring there’s a sustainable life cycle for all materials and avoiding things going into landfill to minimize the impact on the environment.”
