What Can I Do with My Electrical Engineering Degree?

CAD Design ServicesAre you thinking of going back to school or obtaining an electrical engineering degree? If so, you’ve picked a great field! The overall industry of engineering is growing and is expected to continue to do so. It’s a career choice that will be beneficial for all who enter it.

As we mentioned in our previous post, this career is a great choice for those interested in developing, testing, designing and supervising electrical equipment manufacturing. The equipment manufactured is used widely for radar and navigation systems, power generation, electrical systems for aircraft and vehicles, electric motors and more.

Electrical engineers typically work in the following fields:

  • Federal government
  • Manufacturing
  • Engineering services firms
  • Development industries
  • Commerce
  • Electronics
  • Broadcasting
  • Telecommunications
  • Mobile technologies
  • Power supply and distribution
  • Instrumentation and control
  • Construction

Those that wish to work in a more specialized industry may be required to further their education to a Master’s Degree to ensure they’re qualified for the positions.

According to bls.gov, electrical engineers are responsible for the following:

  • Design new ways to use electrical power to develop or improve products
  • Do detailed calculations to develop manufacturing, construction, and installation standards and specifications
  • Direct manufacturing, installing, and testing of electrical equipment to ensure that products meet specifications and codes
  • Investigate complaints from customers or the public, evaluate problems, and recommend solutions
  • Work with project managers on production efforts to ensure that projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget

The website also states that though a degree is required to work in this field, employers also value practical experience, so participation in cooperative engineering programs, in which students earn academic credit for structured work experience, is valuable as well.
