Technical drawing is rarely done anymore, as manual drafting isn’t necessary due to CAD software. But, there are those that still draw by hand. When they do, specific tools are needed. Below, you’ll find the most helpful and popular instruments for drafters.
Drawing Board – Drawing paper is placed on this board to help offer a smooth surface for working. Boards are normally 24×36 in size and serve as a workspace for drafters.
Triangles – Made from transparent celluloid materials, a triangle is used to draw isometric lines. It can also be used for oblique drawings.
T-square – Fashioned in the shape of the letter ‘t’ this tool is used in drawing horizontal lines. It can be used with or without the head. The lower edge of this instrument can be used as a guide for cutting while the blade can be used to measure and draw.
Protractor – This tool works at an angle or degree ranging from 360 degrees down to 0. It’s made from celluloid plastic and used to plot angles on drawings.
Drawing Pencil – Coming in various types and classifications, the drawing pencil is used to sketch drafts. The hardness of the lead differs depending on the type of pencil.
Technical Pencil – Used to sketch a final draft, this pencil is capable of drawing the finest line possible from the smallest pin calibration.
French Curve – You can draw an irregular, curved shape easily with this instrument. Those that need various geometric curves will find this tool useful.
Scale – Used for measuring, the scale is great for helping with enlarging or reducing a measurement for drawings. The scale can use feet and inches, as well as metric and English calibration systems.
Template – With different shapes, holes and other patterns, this tool ensures you’re able to project drawings in different shapes without error.
Compass – Used to draw circles accurately, this instrument can be used on base drawings in projecting lines. It will also draw arcs, as well.
Eraser – Remove unwanted marks on the drawing paper with this rubber tool.
Drafting Tape – In order to prevent drawing paper from moving on the drawing board, you need drafting tape. It fastens the paper to the board and can be removed easily without harming the drafts.
