Impact of Built Environment

The built environment is evolving, with BIM and streamlined processes but, it still has a profound impact on our planet. From construction materials to energy consumption, the construction and operation of buildings contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and habitat destruction.

Cement production alone accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, while energy consumption in buildings also represents a substantial portion of total energy usage worldwide. Moreover, the extraction and transportation of raw materials and construction waste generation further aggravate environmental degradation.

Emissions aren’t limited to a single source. They include multiple direct and indirect factors spanning the entire lifecycle of a building, from construction to operation and beyond. These are divided into scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, and addressing them will effectively mitigate environmental impact.

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from on-site fuel combustion, vehicles, and other direct sources.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from electricity consumption for powering construction activities, lighting, and equipment operation.
  • Scope 3: Indirect emissions in a company’s value chain like upstream and downstream activities like materials procurement and waste disposal.
