Fighting Rising Sea Levels – Growing Islands by Harnessing the Power of the Ocean

Climate change is wreaking havoc all over the world. With rising sea levels and coastal erosion, island dwellers are at severe risk of losing their homes and way of life. While efforts to mitigate the encroaching of ocean waters by building barriers or pumping sand are somewhat successful, they are often resource extensive. Now, a team from MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab is using the power of the ocean itself to grow islands and beaches.

Together with Maldives-based organization Invena, they are developing a network of affordable, versatile underwater bladders that, by harnessing the force of the ocean, facilitate sand accumulation. Their goal is to support the natural development of self-organized sand formations, leading to the creation of new islands or the restoration of coastlines.

“By collaborating with the natural forces of the ocean we believe we can promote the self-organization of sand structures without permanent man-made barriers or the continual dredging and destruction of natural habitats. Compared with traditional approaches that attempt to fight the forces of nature, we are aiming to build with nature, rather than destroy,” the growing islands team at Self-Assembly Lab says.

Growing Islands by Collaborating with Nature!

The entire team is taking a sustainable approach to growing islands and shorelines. Man-made barriers can harm natural habitats and disrupt ecosystems, but by harnessing the ocean’s power to facilitate growth, they are striving to restore coastal vitality in an environmentally conscious manner.

Several lab experiments and field experiments were conducted, analyzing copious data to comprehend, and develop an effective system for sand accumulation. The research team also Maldives’ weather patterns to gain insights into how wind and ocean forces will affect sand accumulation.

After hundreds of experiments, satellite imagery, and meticulous data analysis, researchers were able to track the progress. The results will be presented at the MIT Museum as part of an exhibition.

Sand accumulation can be looked at as a promising future solution in saving coastal regions grappling with rising sea levels owing to global boiling. As they face a mounting threat, harnessing the power of nature is a sustainable approach. By understanding the mechanisms of sand accumulation, innovative techniques can be developed to strategically promote the buildup of sand along vulnerable shorelines. This will play a crucial role in safeguarding communities and ecosystems from the encroaching ocean.

Today, innovative techniques and approaches are required to revolutionize our efforts in reducing CO2 emissions, driving us toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future. The AEC industry, which has the power to shape the future with energy-efficient and green structures, is adopting environmentally friendly methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net zero. As these advancements continue to unfold, they hold the potential to inspire positive change across various sectors, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.
