MIT Takes Kirigami Approach to Create Lightweight, Strong Materials

In the AEC industry, as new technologies emerge, the quest for materials that are simultaneously lightweight and strong also goes on. There’s a need to find materials that enhance the structural integrity of buildings but also contribute to greater sustainability and efficiency. While research on new construction materials continues, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has some positive developments to report!

A team of researchers from MIT have used kirigami, a Japanese paper-cutting technique, to create a type of high-performance architectural material known as plate lattice. Borrowing inspiration from natural cellular structures like bones, they customized the properties of these architected materials by altering the unit cell geometry, leading to the creation of ultralight, strong materials.

Professor Neil Gerstenfeld, who leads the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) at MIT and is senior author of this study says the materials are lighter than cork but have high strength and stiffness.

The Need for Lightweight and Stronger Architectural Materials

Today, it has become crucial to find architectural and construction materials that combine minimal weight with exceptional strength and durability. Firstly, lightweight materials hold immense potential for sustainability. Their reduced weight means less energy is required for transportation, lowering fuel consumption and emissions. Moreover, the efficient use of materials not only minimizes waste but also reduces the overall environmental impact of projects.

Furthermore, the reduced weight simplifies the construction process, often leading to shorter construction times and lower labor costs. In addition to being lighter, if the materials are strong, it will enhance the structural integrity of buildings, potentially saving lives in the event of seismic activities.

Applications

This development of ultra-strong yet lightweight materials promises innovative solutions and applications. These materials, engineered to morph and retain their structural integrity under specific loads, are paving the way for transformative advancements in architecture, aerospace, and the automotive sectors.

Transforming Architecture

The unique combination of strength and lightness of these materials will allow the creation of structures that challenge traditional norms. From skyscrapers to futuristic bridges with unparalleled structural integrity, these materials are poised to reshape our urban landscapes.

Aviation and Aerospace Innovations

The aviation and aerospace sectors will benefit immensely from these ultra-light, strong materials. Weight is a critical factor in the aerospace industry, affecting fuel efficiency and overall performance. Using these materials for aircraft design can significantly reduce weight, leading to enhanced fuel economy and reduced emissions. Furthermore, robustness will improve the structural integrity of aircraft, ensuring safety and reliability.

Revolutionizing Automotive Engineering

Again, it’s about weight and saving fuel. Every pound saved translates to improved fuel efficiency and performance. Lightweight components can be integrated into vehicle design to enhance fuel economy, extend electric vehicle range, and improve overall handling and agility, and their strength and durability contribute to safety.

The emergence of ultra-light, strong materials is not merely a technological advancement; it’s a catalyst for innovation and progress across multiple industries. These materials are poised to transform the way we build and experience the world around us, ushering in a future where strength and light coexist harmoniously.
