MIT Takes Kirigami Approach to Create Lightweight, Strong Materials

In the AEC industry, as new technologies emerge, the quest for materials that are simultaneously lightweight and strong also goes on. While research on new construction materials continues, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has some positive developments to report!

A team of researchers from MIT have used kirigami, a Japanese paper-cutting technique, to create a type of high-performance architectural material known as plate lattice. Borrowing inspiration from natural cellular structures like bones, they customized the properties of these architected materials by altering the unit cell geometry, leading to the creation of ultralight, strong materials.

Professor Neil Gerstenfeld, who leads the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) at MIT and is senior author of this study says the materials are lighter than cork but have high strength and stiffness.
