Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince & chairman of NEOM announced the design and architecture of THE LINE – a 500-meter-tall mirrored linear city that would run for 170 kilometers across the desert If built successfully, the city could house up to nine million people.
THE LINE’s designs reveal a civilizational revolution that prioritizes humans, providing an unprecedented urban living experience while preserving the natural environment.
NEOM launched the initial idea and vision of the city in January of 2021, redefining the concept of urban development and what cities of the future should look like.
THE LINE’s designs represent how urban communities will look in the future in an environment free of roads, cars, and emissions. It will be powered entirely by renewable energy and will prioritize people’s health and well-being over transportation and infrastructure, as is customary in traditional cities. It prioritizes nature over-development and will help to preserve 95 percent of NEOM’s land.
THE LINE will eventually house 9 million people and will have a 34-square-kilometer footprint, which is unprecedented in comparison to other cities of similar size. As a result, the infrastructure footprint will be reduced and never-before-seen efficiencies in city functions will be realized. Its year-round ideal climate will allow residents to enjoy the surrounding nature while walking. Residents will also have access to all THE LINE facilities within a five-minute walk, as well as a high-speed rail with a 20-minute end-to-end transit time.

THE LINE presents an innovative method for urban planning: Zero Gravity Urbanism is the idea of overlaying city functions vertically while allowing individuals to move freely in all three directions (up, down, or across) to reach them. This design layers public parks and pedestrian spaces, schools, housing, and places of employment instead of just tall buildings, making it possible to move easily and meet all daily needs in under five minutes.
The exterior of THE LINE will be a mirror facade, giving it a distinctive personality and enabling even its small footprint to fit into the environment. The interior will be constructed to produce amazing experiences and wonderful moments. A group of renowned architects and engineers will build this ground-breaking idea for the city of the future under the direction of NEOM.
By considerably upgrading building technology and manufacturing processes, the city’s design will be fully digitalized, and the construction will be industrialized to a large extent in order to disrupt current business practices.
The unveiling of THE LINE’s designs is a continuation of NEOM’s advancements in the creation of its flagship initiatives, including OXAGON, its reimagined manufacturing, and innovation city; TROJENA, an international mountain tourism destination that will feature the first outdoor skiing in the Arabian Gulf; and the debut of two NEOM subsidiaries: ENOWA, its energy, water, and hydrogen company; and the NEOM Tech & Digital Company.
