New Year’s Resolutions for Engineers

Streamline Management

You might need to take some time to streamline your management system so that you can start 2016 off in a new light. Though you might not think there’s anything wrong with your managing skills, every person can improve somewhere. Find the spot you need to progress and work on that throughout the year.

Join Groups

There are several engineering societies you can join to help further your experience and knowledge. Consider the following:

  • IEEE
  • ASPE
  • ASHE

You might have thought this activity was over with after you received your degree. However, researching throughout all stages of life is key to growing and succeeding as a professional. Research new project reports as the opportunity arises.

Field Work

Shadow operators, suppliers or construction contractors to learn more about each and every stage of the overall process you’re working with. You’ll gain a great deal of insight when doing so.

Be Accessible

Consider speaking at a conference or webinar to get yourself out there and accessible. Also consider publishing technical articles in trade publications as well. As an engineer, you’ll find several ways to get out there and make yourself known.

Gain Knowledge in Finances

It might be a great idea to take time to learn the ways of your clients and their business habits. You might better frame your engineering work by basing it on their financial needs and forecasts. If you need help, consider working with a financial advisor or coach during the learning process.

Monitor Past Projects

A great way to further your knowledge or improve future projects is to monitor previous work. It’s the only way you can see how they’re doing, realistically. Learn from the project’s strengths and the weaknesses it has faced in the real world. You’ll be able to improve work moving forward and learn from past mistakes or shortcomings.

Before learning new things in 2016, consider reassessing what you’ve learned in 2015. Try applying it to work for the new year. Also reexamine guide conditions and in-house procedures as well. Make changes, as needed, within this year.

We hope these resolutions help you become a more efficient engineer in 2016! If you’re more interested in learning how you can outsource engineering needs for the upcoming year, contact Indovance!
