NVIDIA Omniverse Explores Metaverse and AI Capabilities for BIM Schemas

NVIDIA Omniverse Explores Metaverse

Nvidia is Betting Big on the Metaverse.

Nvidia announced a number of new metaverse initiatives at this year’s SIGGRAPH, an annual computer graphics conference. These include the release of Omniverse Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE), a “suite of cloud-native AI models and services” for creating 3D avatars; new neural graphics SDKs like NeuralVDB; plans to evolve Universal Scene Description (USD), an open-source file format for 3D scene representation; and various other Omniverse platform updates.

The study is part of Nvidia’s multi-year plan to broaden USD’s capabilities beyond visual effects in order to better support ‘Industrial Metaverse’ applications in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and BIM Schemas.

Encoding Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) in Universal Scene Description (USD)

Nvidia is pursuing how BIM schemas, particularly Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), can be layered on top of USD, the Pixar-developed 3D scene description and file format that serves as the foundation for Nvidia Omniverse, the 3D design collaboration platform.

According to Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia, the default schemas created by Pixar are the fundamental building blocks for computer graphics and that, over time, more and more schemas will appear for various industries, including AEC.

SIGGRAPH — the world’s largest gathering of computer graphics experts — saw a glimpse into the future of AI-infused virtual worlds as NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang finished the company’s special address.

According to Steve May, chief technology officer at Pixar Animation Studios, “USD is a cornerstone of Pixar’s workflow and it’s seeing quickly expanding momentum as an open-source framework across not only VFX and animation, but now industrial, design, and scientific applications.” A wide range of businesses would greatly benefit from NVIDIA’s contributions to assist USD develop as the open foundation of fully interoperable 3D platforms.

The announcements included a slew of updates to NVIDIA Omniverse, a platform for 3D design collaboration and world simulation that is a cornerstone of the NVIDIA Studio software suite. Apps such as Create, Machinima, Audio2Face, and Nucleus will get new features and improvements to help 3D artists create virtual worlds, digital twins, and avatars for the metaverse.

What is NVIDIA Omniverse?

NVIDIA Omniverse, an open platform for building and connecting virtual worlds based on Universal Scene Description (USD), has recently received a significant upgrade.

Omniverse Apps, including Create 2022.2, have received a significant PhysX update that includes soft-body simulation, particle-cloth simulation, and soft-contact models, bringing more realism to physically accurate virtual worlds. Through a new collaboration interface for non-destructive USD workflows, the new OmniLive workflows give artists more freedom.

Omniverse Capabilities for the AEC Industry

The role Omniverse plays in AEC may radically change if the IFC framework is encoded into USD. Currently, it’s utilised mostly for conceptual design, but if IFC were included, together with the significant underlying data that comprises the premier open standard for BIM, Nvidia could give Omniverse a more significant position in the authoring of detailed designs and even operations. The potential for building actual digital twins on Nvidia’s constantly expanding platform is also increased by the company’s ongoing work on real-time IoT data streaming into Omniverse.

According to Raji Arasu, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Autodesk, “Autodesk has been closely involved in the development of USD from its early origins as a method of standardising the interchange of 3D data in animation and visual effects workflows.” We have always recognised the value of 3D interoperability, and we have already started expanding USD’s applications beyond of the media and entertainment industry to include design, engineering, and industrial applications. We are encouraged by the momentum USD is gaining from partners like NVIDIA since we think it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the metaverse concept and all the workflows it makes possible for our customers.

NVIDIA has also revealed that it would contribute to NVIDIA Omniverse by investing in the development of USD plugins for well-known 3D software ecosystems. PTC Creo, SideFX Houdini, Autodesk Alias, Autodesk Civil3D, and Siemens Xcelerator are among the new beta releases for these. And more are on the way.
