GIS (Geographic Information System), is a new age technology for gathering, managing and analyzing geographical data systematically. It is an easy to use tool and provides accurate data of any geographical location. Whether you want to find out about the existing object or measure the exact area of the place, GIS would provide you with a bundle of information within couple of minutes. It saves a huge amount of time and provides and detects loopholes faster with greater precision. GIS can be used as a visualization of data in a spatial environment. GIS gives freedom to make layers of digital maps. Today people are making hundreds and thousands of maps every day revealing patterns, topography and trends about everything present on the Earth’s surface.
Outsourcing GIS services is a boon to many industries as it saves time, energy and reduces labor cost. One such project was completed recently where Indovance helped its client achieve the objective of building FOC (Fiber Optic Cable) network in the rural area of one of the cities of USA. Indovance Inc partnered with the client to provide drafting and modeling services in an efficient and cost-effective manner using GIS technology.
Requirement & Solution Architect
The rural area of USA is huge and to create detailed plan of forming FOC network was a big challenge. Client wanted us to prepare and provide all necessary required details of the Pole’s placement and draft cable lines with proper naming of the Poles and other details like dimensions, distances, depth etc. in pdf formats. Though the task looked enormous initially, our experts came up with well thought out plan and gave exact solution to complete the entire project in time and efficiently.
Indovance Working Process
The project was divided into a 2-steps –
- Preliminary Planning stage.
- Engineering Data.
During the Preliminary Planning Stage, we provided data for Pole detail such as –
- Pole Location
- Pole Number
- Types of Poles
- Distance between 2 Poles
- Whether to provide a Guy-rope or not.
These details were worked out with the help of QGIS, Google Earth and AutoCAD software.
Providing FOC in rural areas have its own bunch of limitations such as –
- There were no planned areas.
- Houses and other buildings were planned haphazardly, therefore, it is difficult to connect all the cables from the pole to the houses.
- Providing poles on equidistant is a major issue.
The FOC must have 2 connection –
One is from Pole to Pole and the other is from Pole to Houses/Building. Also, care must be taken to place the FOC wire 4 to 5 feet below the electricity cable to maintain any kind of mishap. These cables are cut and connected through a splicing machine to run through the network smoothly.
The next stage is providing the Engineering Data. During this process, the drawings should be provided with –
- Ring cut
- Splicing
- Maintenance Coil and End Coil.
- Weather to provide riser or not. (Since this project was done in a rural area all the cables were provided aerially.)
Since Indovance has an unparallel experience to deliver such kind of GIS services, still the work pressure was extreme and meeting client’s need was essential because every client is different and so is their needs. The area that was to be covered was approximately 40,608 sq. ft and the total number of poles to be handled were 8000. Indovance can proudly say that this whole project was completed before the stipulated time period with quality-driven work.
