One such building that has emerged in this regard is the Hemisphere in Liverpool. This 119,612 square feet, £56m structure located at the Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) Innovation District, is set to become one of the first UK-designed buildings to achieve six global sustainability accreditations-

Hemisphere’s six global sustainability accreditations

  • Net-zero: A net-zero building is extremely energy-efficient. It has zero carbon emissions during its operation.
  • Platinum WELL: The WELL Building Standard is a certification program that promotes health and wellness in buildings concerning air, water, light, nourishment, fitness, comfort, and mind.
  • BREEAM Excellent: BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a widely recognized sustainability rating system for buildings. BREEAM Excellent is the second-highest certification level, signifying a building’s compliance with stringent environmental and sustainability standards.
  • EPC Rated A: EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) is an energy-efficiency rating ranging from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). EPC A rating is the highest and indicates that a building features high energy efficiency. 
  • WiredScore Certified: A WiredScore certificate is awarded to buildings equipped with advanced tech infrastructure. The Hemisphere offers ultrafast internet connectivity, an innovation lab, EV charging points, and more.
  • NABERS 5.5*: NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a rating system that evaluates a building’s energy, water, waste, and indoor environment performance to provide comprehensive ratings.

Colin Sinclair, Sciontec and KQ Liverpool’s Chief Executive talked about Hemisphere achieving the accreditations. He said “We’re proud to be working with Liverpool City Council, with the support of the City Region, to deliver a holistic approach to creating Paddington Village as an inclusive destination for health, life sciences, tech and digital innovation. Nothing encapsulates that vision more than Paddington’s next new building, the 120,000 sq ft HEMISPHERE.”

“HEMISPHERE promises to change the future of work. Operational net zero carbon; designed for people who truly care about the environment, for businesses and agencies who are driven by innovation, inclusivity, and wellbeing,” he added.
