Upgrade Your Green Credentials with Smart, Sustainable Shopping – World Paper Bag Day 2022

Paper Bag Day 2022

Every year on July 12, Paper Bag Day is marked to reinforce the critical necessity for the regular use of paper bags over plastic bags. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the negative impacts of plastic on the environment. Paper bags are a simple substitute for single-use plastic bags that take hundreds of years to break down in landfills since they are not biodegradable.

A different theme is observed every year on World Paper Bag Day. The theme for Paper Bag Day this 2022 year is, “If You’re ‘Fantastic’, Do Something ‘Dramatic’ To Cut The ‘Plastic’, Use ‘Paper Bags’.”

Plastic production has increased at a faster rate than any other material since the 1970s. Global production of primary plastic is anticipated to reach 1,100 million tonnes by 2050 if historical growth rates hold true.

Additionally, we have observed a concerning trend toward single-use plastic goods, which are intended to be discarded after only one brief usage. Almost 98% of products made of single-use plastic come from “virgin” feedstock, or fossil fuels. A whopping 36% of all plastics made are used in packaging, including single-use items for food and drink containers that are disposed of in landfills or as uncontrolled garbage in a startling 85% of cases.

By 2040, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions related to the manufacture, consumption, and disposal of traditional plastics derived from fossil fuels is expected to increase to 19% of the global carbon budget.

We globally produce about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year and these emerging patterns are unsettling.

Genetic Engineering of Natural Products for Sustainability

Papers have historically been used in packaging applications for a variety of products, including candy, pet food, and dried food. However, by the early 2000s, the demand for paper as a flexible packaging substrate started to diminish as a result of downgauging competition and the emergence of plastic substitutes.

Unlike plastic, paper can be re-pulped, making recycling it rather simple. As a result, it is less susceptible to contamination and does not depend on chemical reactions. Therefore, if employing paper as a substrate for flexible packaging does not result in an increase in food waste or compromise other crucial qualities of the packaged product, there may be some environmental benefits. This has caused some brands to switch to paper packaging from plastic.

Methods are always being sought for exploring natural products’ biosynthetic pathways because many of them have biological and restorative significance. This could eventually lead to greater production and the creation of new materials.

Many natural fibers, including hemp, flax, and jute, are gaining qualities thanks to genetic engineering that will enable them to be utilized as better alternatives to plastics rather than just for clothing, textiles, and money. Flax-based innovations include “jute soy,” which is created from the cellulose of jute fiber and the protein of soy resin, as well as Flaxstic, a blend of discarded flax straw, plant-based biopolymers, and recycled materials.

Sustainable Smart Shopping

Every one of us has a bigger role to play when we walk down the sustainability road.

To lessen your plastic waste and impact on the environment, choose food that doesn’t come in plastic packaging, carry a reusable bag, buy locally produced goods, and refill containers the next time you’re out shopping.

You can ask the eateries you frequent to stop using plastic straws, bring your own mug of coffee to work, or put pressure on your local government to change how they handle waste in your community, among many other things.

To reduce your plastic footprint, take a pledge and develop new lifestyle habits.

Better recycling systems, more recyclable flexible packaging solutions, less material per package, and a greater emphasis on developing a sustainable approach are the ways in which the flexible packaging sector may go forward.
