AI-Powered Material Selection for 3D-Printed Concrete

Recently, there’s been news that a research team from Missouri University of Science and Technology was awarded USD 1.4 million from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop an artificial intelligence program that will determine the best locally available materials for 3D-printed concrete.

Material selection is crucial in 3D-printing homes. 3D printing is a new-age construction technology and while ongoing research seeks new materials, this AI-fueled program promises to catapult the technology to even greater heights by allowing construction experts and engineers to select the best locally available materials.

Why Material Selection Matters in Construction

Material selection is a critical aspect that significantly impacts the success, durability, and overall performance of a construction project. Whether it’s traditional construction or cutting-edge technologies like 3D printing and prefab, the materials used form the foundational elements of the entire structure. Choosing the right materials ensures that the final product meets the necessary structural requirements, withstands environmental factors, and fulfills the intended purpose effectively.

With a growing emphasis on eco-conscious practices, material selection assumes even greater importance in shaping a greener future for the construction industry. It calls for materials that not only meet the project’s specific needs but also adhere to long-term sustainability goals. Transitioning away from traditional construction methods, the focus shifts to embracing low-carbon materials, adopting decarbonizing techniques, and exploring innovative construction practices to achieve net-zero environmental impact. AI Program To Help In Material Selection

The research team at Missouri University of Science and Technology is striving to use 50% or more locally sourced materials to replace traditional cement. They are conducting tests to assess the materials’ suitability for construction purposes. Dr. Kamal Khayat, who leads the team, says “Potential materials will come from natural minerals, industrial byproducts, and agricultural waste, which could include sources such as rice husk ash, palm oil fuel ash, ground dolomite, and ground glass.”

They will use the materials or potentially 3D printing bridges, barracks, guardhouses, defense obstacles, and more. To reinforce the 3D printed structure, Dr. Khayat’s team will consider using metal and synthetic structural fibers, along with unconventional fibers derived from plants and recycled materials like bamboo, coconut, glass, hemp, cellulose, and rubber. AI will help them streamline the process and evaluate the performance and suitability of the materials.

Dr. Khayat, S&T’s vice chancellor for research and innovation says “By harnessing the power of AI, our research team aims to streamline the process of material selection, ensuring optimal performance and cost-effectiveness. The AI program will evaluate a wide range of locally available materials in various areas and identify the most appropriate combinations for 3D printing concrete.”

This method will significantly reduce construction-related costs and address the supply chain issues the construction industry is currently grappling with.
