ISO 19650 – BIM Standards for Better Construction Life-Cycle Management

The AEC industry faces the challenge of delivering high-quality deliverables that are safe, within budget, and under a tight deadline.

Despite the roadblocks and fierce competition, that continue to be beyond a company’s control, leveraging new technologies can help AEC business increase visibility and address inefficiencies in the process, and enable teams to work more effectively and efficiently.

Several nations have made the use of specific BIM standards mandatory since the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published its first global BIM standards in 2019.

These standards enable teams to work more effectively and efficiently.

Let’s understand the ISO 19650 standards for BIM

ISO – International Organization for Standardization

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global federation of national standards organizations (ISO member bodies).

ISO is committed to the creation of global norms in a variety of fields, including technology, business operations, transportation safety, quality assurance systems, and management procedures.

The Organization-created standards assist businesses in lowering maintenance costs for equipment, preventing production errors and disputes over product conformity or quality control issues, and maintaining consistency between various suppliers of raw materials or finished goods used in manufacturing processes.

Businesses can create contractual terms based on standardized methodology and comparable performance criteria with the aid of ISO standards. This raises the bar for the industry as a whole while also enabling businesses to choose the most effective suppliers for their requirements.

In addition to these real-world applications for its standards, ISO is a pioneer in advancing sustainability initiatives due to its dedication to establishing a global framework for energy efficiency and environmental protection. The widespread use of technology in all facets of life today means that ISO’s role in ensuring proactive safety measures remain at the forefront of developing practices in all industries is becoming more and more crucial.

Typically, ISO technical committees are used to prepare international standards. Every member body with an interest in a topic for which a technical committee has been established is entitled to representation on that committee.

Governmental and non-governmental international organizations collaborate with ISO and participate in the work. On all issues pertaining to electrotechnical standardization, ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

ISO 19650 – BIM Standards to Stand Out

ISO 19650 is a set of standards created to make it easier to manage and organize the data generated during construction projects. The standard explains typical issues with effective information management, including the lack of clarity, appropriate structure, and processes required for project success.

The ISO 19650 guidelines are based on the BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013 UK standards for building information modeling-based information management.

On a broad scale, it offers recommendations for the management and storage of models and data to enhance accessibility and coordination among various disciplines and sectors involved in the process. As a result, modern design decisions can be made more quickly and intelligently throughout the course of a project. Practically speaking, ISO19650 specifies requirements for classification schemes as well as guidelines for the creation, sharing, archiving, and storage of model-based documents.

In a nutshell, ISO 19650 is a BIM (Building Information Modeling) standard outlining a set of international codes that describes the procedures for efficient information management in the design, construction, and management of building assets.

Today, organizations are increasingly making sure that their teams follow ISO 19650-compliant procedures because doing so guarantees increased productivity and efficiency for all facets of construction projects.

Adhering to ISO-19650 promotes smoother construction projects, accelerates the delivery of value, and reduces the possibility of costly mistakes in the future.

ISO 19650 BIM Standards

  • BS EN ISO 19650-1 – Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modeling. Part 1: Concepts and principles.
  • BS EN ISO 19650-2 – Organization of information about construction works – Information management using building information modeling. Part 2: Delivery phase of assets.
  • BS EN ISO 19650-3:2020 – Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modeling (BIM). Information management using building information modeling. The operational phase of the assets.
  • BS EN ISO 19650-5:2020 – Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modeling (BIM). Information management using building information modeling. Security-minded approach to information management

Big Benefits of ISO 19650 BIM Standards

Leveraging the ISO 19650 standard underlines your organization’s commitment to best practices and processes for construction and facilities management.

Following are the advantages of leveraging the ISO 19650 Standard for AEC Businesses

  • Communication –  Clear and concise communication within the organization as well as with the stakeholders. At the project’s outset, information distribution and the core principles for information management can be clearly articulated.
  • Collaboration – A collaborative approach to working with the project’s stakeholders helps in defining roles with respect to tasks and information outputs, and that each party is fully cognizant of them.
  • Cost – Operating in a process-driven methodology is an efficient and effective way that results in cost savings and reduced resource waste.
  • Compliance – Process Driven approach for compliance with industry standards and codes.
  • Culture of Quality – Mandating best practices at your workplace not only fosters a culture of quality but also elevates your brand

Additionally, it enables your company to cut back on idly spent money and resources.

The Future of BIM and Construction

The two major IIJA (The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act) initiatives, the Federal Highway Administration-run Technology, and Innovation Deployment Program (TIDP) for the transportation industry and advanced digital construction management systems (ADCMS), are likely to encourage the adoption of digital technologies by the construction industry.

A total of $550 million will be made available through these initiatives to encourage the use of digital technologies on government-funded projects.

ADCMS is a component of the TIDP and was developed to advance technologies such as BIM, and 2D and 3D modeling, among others. The TIDP includes research and development (R&D) and other efforts related to highways and transportation. 19 Similar initiatives will probably be investigated in other industrial sectors like energy, mining, and metals.

In a Deloitte survey, more than half of respondents said they planned to invest in digital technologies like BIM, Digital Twins, and AI.

Leading Engineering and Construction companies are proactively adopting a structured framework for mitigating risk, and exploring new technologies and innovation.
