Net Zero Challenges and the Path to Sustainable Construction for SMEs

Net zero, with its ambitious goals and implications for the environment, has captured the attention of companies worldwide. However, many organizations, including SMEs, are finding it challenging to navigate the path towards net zero. One significant hurdle they face is the rising costs associated with transitioning to sustainable practices. BSI, the UK’s national standards body, recently released its third annual Net Zero Barometer, drawing attention to this issue.

The report reveals that while businesses acknowledge the significance of sustainability in their operations, the prevailing cost-of-living crisis and disruptions in supply chains are impeding their progress toward achieving net zero. Firms also believe that appropriate information is essential to address net-zero effectively. The lack of clarity surrounding the definition of net zero and the absence of comprehensive guidance contributes to this challenge. These factors have resulted in 22% of SME leaders doubting the feasibility of achieving net zero by 2050.

Key findings of the report-

  • 82% of business leaders state sustainability and net zero are important in their business practices.
  • A significant portion (32%) feel extremely confident in their understanding of how to achieve net zero, while 47% express slight confidence.
  • The cost-of-living crisis is identified by 63% of respondents as the primary hindrance to progress, followed by the energy crisis (50%).
  • One-third (33%) of SME leaders face challenges in establishing a sustainable supply chain.
  • Nearly one-third (31%) of SME leaders recognize that net zero enhances their organization’s image and reputation with customers and stakeholders.

Net Zero challenges

Implementing renewable energy sources, using energy-efficient methods, and overhauling supply chains, are all ways to achieve sustainability in construction but they often require substantial investments. Despite financial constraints and uncertainty regarding the way forward, SMEs have managed to achieve notable ‘quick wins.’

The report highlights sustainability efforts by SMEs- 44% reduction in waste, a 39% decrease in energy consumption, and 38% have transitioned to LED lightbulbs. Additionally, 25% have adopted clean energy sources, 23% have prioritized building insulation, and 16% have installed their renewable energy sources.

For SMEs with limited financial resources, upfront costs can be daunting and act as a barrier to achieving sustainability goals. Moreover, the lack of clarity surrounding net zero frameworks and standards adds another layer of complexity. The absence of a clear roadmap is a spike in the quest to achieve net zero. Without a well-defined plan and understanding, it becomes challenging to effectively communicate the benefits and secure an internal commitment from employees and leadership.

Overcoming these challenges

The pursuit of achieving net zero requires mindful practices but SMEs might require additional financial support. According to the Barometer report, more than half of the surveyed SMEs (56%) believe that clean energy subsidies and grants for new projects (52%) from the government would aid them in reaching their targets.

Financial assistance will enable access to advanced tools, open more options

Financial assistance will provide a significant boost to SMEs’ efforts in tackling net zero challenges. It will enable them to adopt the necessary tools and technologies to effectively decarbonize construction. In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, numerous technological advancements have emerged that can revolutionize sustainability efforts. AI-powered tools, Drones, prefab, and 3D printing are all effective ways to improve resource efficiency, optimize operations, and minimize environmental footprints. By adopting these practices and leveraging technology-driven tools, firms can unlock new opportunities, streamline processes, and enhance their overall sustainability performance. It is imperative for firms to proactively seek out these innovative solutions and integrate them into their operations to drive meaningful change and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Additionally, both companies and suppliers should prioritize obtaining green building credentials. The report emphasizes this point by stating that nearly three-quarters (73%) of consumers are willing to pay more for products or services from companies that demonstrate strong environmental credentials and a genuine commitment to achieve net zero.

Focus on efficient building design

The building design can play a crucial role in achieving net zero by maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts. Sustainable building design encompasses various aspects, including passive design strategies, energy-efficient systems, and the use of renewable energy sources. By incorporating features such as green roofs, efficient HVAC systems, and low-carbon materials, buildings can significantly reduce energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Furthermore, thoughtful building orientation, strategic placement of windows for natural daylighting, and efficient space utilization can optimize occupant comfort while minimizing the need for artificial lighting and heating or cooling. Designing buildings with net zero goals in mind allows for the integration of renewable energy systems, such as solar panels or geothermal heating, further offsetting carbon emissions. The importance of building design in achieving net zero cannot be overstated, as it sets the foundation for sustainable and energy-efficient operations throughout the building’s lifecycle.

Decarbonizing mobility

Decarbonizing mobility is another critical aspect to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This involves shifting away from fossil fuel-dependent vehicles and embracing low-carbon alternatives such as electric vehicles (EVs) and public transportation systems. Investing in charging infrastructure for EVs, promoting active transportation options like cycling and walking, and integrating smart transportation systems can all contribute to decarbonizing mobility.

Overcoming net zero challenges will be a collective effort. Governments and firms alike must spark an interest in the industry and highlight the benefits of environmentally friendly built environments. They need to develop programs to impart information and educate their employees and stakeholders on sustainable practices, fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and empowering individuals to make informed choices. BSI’s Net Zero Barometer states that 28% of respondents think educational projects would help them reach net zero, and 22% believe they could achieve it with more information. Additionally, firms must actively track and measure their progress toward net zero, ensuring accountability and driving continuous improvement.
