What to Consider When Presenting Your CAD Model

Giving presentations is hard, even for the most seasoned professional. When you’re a designer who has developed a CAD model for a project and you’re asked to present it to the client or your colleagues, you may be intimidated. You’re a designer; not a public speaker.

However, there are times when you may be asked to show the client what you’ve been working on for them. Who better to explain the project than you? You’ve probably spent countless hours developing it. You know the ins and outs. The same applies to sharing your work with colleagues.

Your first inclination may be to think that the model is self-explanatory. You did good, detailed work based on what the client asked for, so what is there to present? The client knows what they needed and you provided it. But, it’s not always that simple. They may want to know the reason behind different aspects of your design. If you’re presenting it to colleagues, they may want to take notes for future projects, or they may need to know details because of other work they are doing for the same client.

There are several scenarios in which you may be asked to present your CAD model. In this two-part series, we’re going to take a look at some of them and provide some questions you should ask yourself as you’re putting together your presentation. For the most affordable CAD drafting services available, call Indovance.

Who is going to be at the meeting?

We’ve mentioned that you may be asked to present to a client or to a colleague. The information you provide will be different for each person. If it’s for a group of colleagues, you will want to provide a thorough and detailed presentation on the process you used. They are going to want to know the steps you took and why you took them. Your fellow engineers are going to understand the technical concepts you talk about more than a client will. If you have screenshots or notes you took while creating the model, share them. They will be interested in how you got from point A to point B.

If you’re presenting a CAD model to a client, you will want to hold back the technical details and terms. A client hired you to do the job because they don’t have the capability to do it. They want to see the final product and aren’t going to be interested in how you got there. Think about what you would want to know if someone made something for you. You would want to know why certain things were done and how it will benefit you. Also, take into consideration the client’s request. Prepare to talk about how you met their request with this project.

Now that you know who you’re presenting to, take a look at the second part of this series in order to figure out the reason for your presentation and how to best go about it.
