Winners of the 2023 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards
The winners of this year’s AIA/ALA Library Building Awards have raised the bar once again, creating inspiring and transformative spaces. Here’s a brief look at the winning libraries-
Atherton Library, Atherton, California
Located in Atherton, California, the Atherton Library is a remarkable ‘civic hub’ designed by WRNS Studio. Boasting modernized spaces, intimate seating nooks, meeting rooms, a digital lab, and multi-use areas, this library has been thoughtfully crafted to serve its community’s diverse needs. Additionally, the Atherton Library incorporates biophilic elements and is both net-zero and LEED Gold certified, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.
Louisville Free Public Library Northeast Regional Library, Louisville, Kentucky
MSR Design and JRA Architects joined forces to create the stunning Louisville Free Public Library, a state-of-the-art facility that has replaced a smaller, outdated structure located on the green space associated with the Bellevoir Mansion. Throughout the design process, the team prioritized preserving the site’s mature trees, ensuring the new library would seamlessly integrate into its natural surroundings. With its innovative design and focus on learning and wellness, the Louisville Free Public Library has become a true community hub. By emphasizing walking and connections with nature the library inspires patrons to engage with its sustainable features through a diverse range of learning styles.
Missoula Public Library New Main Library, Missoula, Montana
Serving over 120,000 patrons, the Missoula Public Library has become a vibrant cultural hub, thanks to the inspired design work of MSR Design and A&E Design. The stunning, aesthetically pleasing structure boasts incredible views and an adjacent park, inviting visitors to take in the surrounding natural beauty. It draws inspiration from the region’s geological features resulting in a striking and memorable structure. The library’s exterior cladding reflects the changing valley weather.
Student Success District, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona
The Student Success District lies in the University of Arizona’s Tucson campus. It is a dynamic hub that provides a range of essential services to students. The designers, Miller Hull Partnership and Poster Mirto McDonald successfully transformed three separate structures into a unified space, which includes the stunning four-story, LEED Gold-certified Bartlett Academic Success Center. To create a flow between the previously inward-facing buildings, the team introduced new entryways by incorporating steel plate portals into the facades. Bold graphic signage and wayfinding elements on the inside draw inspiration from a variety of desert landforms, adding to the space’s unique character.
Woburn Public Library, Woburn, Massachusetts
CBT’s design team has seamlessly integrated a stunning, 35,000 sq. ft. expansion into Woburn’s public library, enhancing the building’s original design and aesthetic appeal. Mindful of the existing structure, the team navigated the project with care to add new elements. The new addition features an exterior glazing system that welcomes ample daylight while reducing solar heat gain. The rainscreen, composed of large-format stone panels, pays homage to the original library’s bearing stones while showcasing the addition’s modern technology. The new structure is LEED Gold certified.
Going Green: The Rise of Global Sustainable Building Standards
From the innovative features and sustainability elements of the Atherton Library to the stunning, awe-inspiring design of the Missoula Public Library, each of these structures stands out as a remarkable achievement in architecture and design. The 2023 AIA/ALA Library Building Award projects not only enhance the communities they serve but also embody the ideals of accessibility, sustainability, and innovation in library design.
