10 Steps to BIM Continued

Building Information Model (BIM) is a process that increases productivity and the quality of work for any and all construction firms. While the process isn’t required in the U.S., in 2016, any European firms that work with government construction projects will be required to use BIM. Required or not, the use of this system is very beneficial. In our last blog post, we talked about the first steps to implementing the process into your current workforce. Below, we discuss the final steps to take with BIM modeling services. Documentation. It’s important to make sure your BIM team documents every step of the way. That way, as your pilot program progresses, you’ll be able to create standards. It’s difficult to solidify standards until after the pilot stage is complete. You’ll be able to evolve ideas of standards along the way. Project Leaders. During the pilot stage, you’ll need to pay attention to employees and how they learn. Choose leaders based on those who progress well and those that are excited about learning and implementing the process of BIM modeling services. Take Your Time. It’s understandable that you’d like to get BIM up and running as quickly as possible, but, the reality is, sometimes it takes a while. Transitioning into using the system might take a year or more. Training shouldn’t be rushed. Once you have your leaders and documentation of standards, you’ll be able to take your time and train as needed. Sharing. Being able to share models and projects with other firms that use BIM is a great gain. Once you’re ready to share, make sure you take advantage of this benefit! You’ll be able to coordinate processes and collaborate on a whole other level. Expand. Once standards are in place and leaders have been elected to head up the BIM team, you can move on with expansions and innovations. New coordination, analysis abilities and visualizations will be endless! You’ll be able to offer new services, cut costs and please your clients without hesitation. Advertise the fact that your company is BIM capable and ready to meet the needs of all who hope to hire the best construction firm available! Should Smaller Firms Incorporate BIM?

Are you a small firm, hoping to incorporate BIM into your design efforts? If so, do you worry the process won’t benefit you enough to offset the cost of it? Incorporating BIM into your firm’s day-to-day operations would be greatly beneficial. BIM is a process that does many things. What does it offer, exactly? Ability to share information easily and correctly without taking up too much time Better ability  to control the outcome of an overall project Communicate ideas easily and simply Eliminate the need to rework problematic issues Better visuals Plan with ease BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a 3D model-based process that a firm of any size can use to help them with drafting and design. The process involves every stage of constructing a building or structure from beginning to end, including the following: Delivery of supplies before and during construction Designing the structure (also considered pre-construction) Determining supplies and amount needed Estimating costs from beginning to end Finding resources Overall building process Productivity requirements and goals The only downside to incorporating BIM in-house for small businesses is the cost factor. It’s very expensive to purchase BIM and the software you’ll need. The computer expense is high, as well. For those that have a tight budget, getting a return on your investment might come later than needed. That’s why many firms decide to use BIM service outsourcing. Are you thinking of incorporating this beneficial process into your firm’s design efforts? If so, weigh the odds and decide if purchasing outright is better or if BIM service outsourcing will offer you a better advantage! Purchasing BIM is a big expense, even for a larger business. Why not skip that added expense and choose to outsource BIM instead? This is a great way for smaller firms to incorporate BIM without taking on the overhead of it. Taking advantage of outsourcing BIM modeling services is a great way to plan, design, and construct in way that’s cost efficient and offers a quick turnaround. Don’t hesitate to learn more about BIM. Ways to Make Sure Your Data is Secure

Are you worried about storing invaluable data either online or with an external hard drive? Do you fear that the cloud storage process might put documents and information at risk? Do you constantly worry that your hard drive will crash? If so, there are a few steps you can take to make sure that your data is secure without worry. Encrypted Data Storing your data using encryption with a key that only you know will help secure things immensely. Just be sure to choose a device or cloud service that does allow you to customize the coding. Back Up In order to ensure you have a safe, secure way to save your data, make sure you back it up regularly, several different ways. Use an external hard drive and a second cloud or a data storage facility. Just be sure that the facility offers various options like backup power sources and air conditioning in case its needed. Strong Passwords Never underestimate the power of a strong password. As one security method that gets overlooked, entrepreneur.com states, “Implementing strong passwords is the easiest thing you can do to strengthen your security. [Kent] Cloutier shares his tip for crafting a hard-to-crack password: use a combination of capital and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols and make it 8 to 12 characters long.” Firewall This is a sure way to secure data. A firewall will guard your network by regulating the internet traffic that comes in and out of your business. When purchasing firewalls, make sure to use brand names that are credited. There are also other ways to protect our data as well. These are the most common, yet overlooked ways to ensure information is safe. Update all programs and computers regularly Purchase anti-virus programs Educate employees on security Be wary of suspicious emails Keep internet surfing to verified sites only Fully securing your company’s data is possible, but it takes a great deal of effort from everyone involved. A 3D Printed Beak Saves This Toucan's Life

Are you ready to learn more about the latest news in 3D printing? If so, we have some exciting information. Animal lovers will find this fascinating, as well as those that are interested in 3D printing, in general! This time, the news comes from Brazil. Just last month, they were able to do something we have yet to do here in the U.S. Brazil uses 3D printing more than any other country in the world. They mainly use the technology for medical purposes and have lately been branching out from human medical needs to those of animals, as well. Just last month the country invested in a venture that had techs creating a replica of a toucan’s beak. Using photogrammetry, they replicated the beak and then turned it into a 3D model. Once that was done, they were able to print the beak using PLA plastic and an FDM/FFF-based printer. Birds don’t often survive in the wild without a beak. They’re not able to find or eat food without a properly functioning one. Oftentimes, long-beaked birds of the wild run into windows and cars, hurting only their beaks. 3ders.org states that “Traditionally, doctors have used the sterilized beaks of deceased toucans as a prosthesis for living toucans with injured or broken beaks.  However, due to the many different sizes and shapes of beaks, many of the prostheses made from the beaks of deceased toucans often break or otherwise don’t work as well as intended.  Thankfully, the ability to scan, 3D model, and ultimately 3D print a prosthetic device using today’s 3D printing technologies has helped these doctors create custom-tailored solutions for these injured toucans.” 3D printing has been gradually making its way into the medical field for some time now, but it’s just now getting to be widely known and accepted. It’s exciting to hear that these medical advancements are also helping save the lives of animals, as well! There’s also a report of a different bird receiving a prosthetic beak at the beginning of last month. In May, the white pelican was in captivity at a zoo. It’s suspected he broke his beak during a fight with another male bird. With a beak that didn’t function, zoologists feared the bird would die. A month ago, surgery was done and the bird is doing great with his 3D-printed beak! Are you interested in learning more about 3D printing? If so, continue to check back with us periodically. We will keep you up-to-date with the latest news. Creative 3D CAD Services | Indovance Need help to grow your business without the added overhead costs? If so, consider outsourcing with Indovance. Electrical Engineering and BIM

Contractors have already started using Building Information Modeling (BIM) on their large-scale projects, but electrical engineers have been one of the last to adopt this technology because of the limits in what it can do for them. BIM renders 3D digital models of each component of a structure so that developers can see how each part will work together. It acts as a more intricate version of CAD software. The collaboration capabilities make it a popular choice with builders because all of the teams involved, from the architects to the plumbers, are able to have input. Electrical engineers have been the last to jump on board because the software has limited capabilities when it comes to electrical design work. Those in the industry who do use it see advantages in the software, and believe that over time developments will be made to increase its value to them. One of the major hurdles for electrical engineers is the inability to create electrical renderings within BIM. Some firms have worked around it by creating their own custom-made visuals to incorporate into the software. They believe that because many developers don’t think electrical engineers need to be brought into the building process from the beginning, BIM software developers didn’t see a need to give them the option to create 3D renderings. They are hopeful that over time, and with increasing use by electrical engineers, that BIM creators will add more components that apply to them. Some of the benefits that electrical engineers see in BIM modeling services are the ability to check for electrical conflicts within the whole structure, much like the other components of the software. A user can also create layouts in order to determine what parts are needed early on the project. Although the designer has to use CAD or other drafting software to create their own 3D renderings of the electrical side, it does allow for materials prefabrication. BIM shows what is needed for the structure, from support systems to trays, brackets, rods, and conduits. This allows designers to have a solid cost estimate of the materials before construction begins. In addition, BIM modeling services allow the user to check electrical distribution for loads and breaker services, and monitor energy usage and lighting. Designers are also able to coordinate mechanical and equipment work remotely using a laptop. Many firms believe these utilities are good enough reasons to use the software, especially if other people involved in the build are using BIM. The collaboration feature of the software is one of the biggest advantages of using it. Large projects have multiple teams working on them that need to have real-time updates on other aspects of the building. When someone makes a change, it is seen by everyone so that modifications can be made. Overall, the benefits of the software outweigh its limitations because it reduces costs across the board because of its ability to track materials and catch problems within a structure before the building process begins. That’s a good enough reason for electrical engineers to continue using it and hope for better software in the future. 10 Steps to BIM

Soon, all construction firms in the UK will need to transition to using BIM modeling services for all government construction projects. This new law will go into effect by 2016. While it isn’t yet a requirement for the U.S. it’s expected that our government will follow suit. It’s leaving some firms running a race to get the process implemented as soon as possible. Even those that aren’t planning to do projects for the government might find that applying BIM into your daily workflow is key in the success of your business. You’ll be amazed by what this process can do for your overall productivity, quality of work and more. Before jumping in and working with BIM, there are several steps that must take place before the system goes live. Below, you’ll find the first five steps to BIM. Learn the Process. This is the most important step when dealing with BIM. Your team will work better if one or two people get to know the system first, then work with and teach others to do so, as well. Talk About Changes. Moving to BIM is going to be difficult now, but in the long run, it will be crucial to the company’s success. Identify and talk about the changes that will come with using this process so that they’ll be able to transition well. Update Technology. While BIM itself is a collaborative process, not a software, it does rely on 3D models. Because of this, the software will be needed to create them. Updating the technology you need to make this possible is key. Also, make sure your hardware is sufficient in power processing and easy to use with the system. Management Planning. As with all new systems, you’ll need to develop a plan that helps with the change, training and support. Employees will have problems and questions. There should be a protocol set forth to handle this. Pilot Programming. According to bimhub.com, “If you do dozens of small projects each year, you might consider completing one pilot and capturing lessons learned before running several more pilot projects.” In our next blog post, we will continue with the last five steps of BIM. Be sure to visit back with us, soon! Affordable BIM Modeling Services | Indovance BIM is a great process to add to your company. Why Some Companies Don’t Adopt BIM — Real Barriers & Fixes

Building Information Modeling (BIM) might be the future of construction, a smarter way to design, plan, and manage projects with fewer surprises and more control. But if it is so effective and powerful, why do some companies still hesitate to adopt it? The truth is, it’s not just about buying new software. Adoption of BIM is hampered by a number of factors, including cultural resistance, client expectations, market maturity, and high upfront costs and training requirements. The leap seems risky, disruptive, or even unnecessary to many businesses, particularly small and mid-sized ones. Today we’ll explore the real reasons why companies don’t adopt BIM, what those barriers look like in day-to-day operations, and how forward-thinking firms are finding practical ways around them. Skills and Training for BIM Adopting BIM isn’t as simple as installing new software, it’s about changing how entire teams think, collaborate, and deliver. And that’s where one of the biggest challenges shows up: a steep learning curve. For many firms, the talent pool already feels stretched. Asking architects, engineers, or contractors to suddenly “switch to BIM” means retraining busy professionals who are often tied to ongoing projects. On top of that, formal BIM training programs are expensive and time-consuming, creating an additional cost burden that small and mid-size firms struggle to absorb. If a business isn’t able to have its current staff learn BIM, then a new person will have to be hired. It takes time to hire a new employee, and for a small business with no dedicated HR person, that can be valuable time lost. The largest factor to consider here is increased capital investment associated with setting up a team, paying them, and purchasing software licenses. A larger business can justify the costs in long-term gains because the company may be able to complete projects more quickly and gain new clients because their turnaround is faster. Small businesses may need longer to see the benefits of investing in BIM and may not want to take the risk. Some companies are afraid that workflow management will become more difficult. One of the features of BIM is the ability to collaborate without having the staff in-house. Project managers may feel more comfortable having their teams on location to work together, not working remotely. Interoperability & Software Fragmentation One of BIM’s promises is seamless collaboration across disciplines. In reality, many firms discover that not all BIM tools “speak the same language.” Interoperability is still a major stumbling block. Architects might work in Revit, contractors in Tekla, and MEP teams in Navisworks. When models are exchanged, information can get lost, corrupted, or misinterpreted. Even something as simple as file version mismatches can cause hours of rework. This fragmentation generates frustration, delays, and a hesitance to completely accept BIM. Why spend money on it if the model isn’t going to consistently travel throughout the project team? Interoperability problems aren’t going to go away overnight, but if firms have good processes in place and the appropriate digital infrastructure, they can eliminate the “lost in translation” phenomenon and realize BIM’s full collaborative potential. A second reason, not uncommon, for delaying the adoption of BIM is the perception that it’s “not required” unless specifically requested by customers. That line of thinking misses the true value BIM provides to every phase of the project lifecycle. BIM is not simply creating 3D models. It’s at its best a data-intense process that unifies people, technology, and processes to abolish speculation and expensive surprises. The BIM Execution Plan (BEP) is at the core of it all. It’s a master plan that defines responsibilities, model standards, and rules for sharing data prior to the project commencement. With BIM, companies release the following capabilities: Clash Detection: Spot clashes among structural, architectural, and MEP components prior to arriving on the jobsite. Quantity Take-offs: Create accurate material quantities directly from the model, eliminating waste and budgeting discrepancies. Point-Cloud-to-BIM: Convert laser scans of existing buildings into precise digital models for retrofits or renovations. Various Dimensions of BIM: Move beyond 3D modeling to include time (4D), cost (5D), sustainability (6D), facilities management (7D), safety (8D), and lean processes (9D) within an entirely data-driven project workflow. These are not mere “add-ons”, they are productivity tools that enhance margins and build client confidence. Whether or not clients are requiring BIM today, providing these services makes firms forward thinking and future ready. Practical Difficulties Here’s the catch: knowing what BIM can do and being ready to deliver it are two very different things. For many firms, the hurdles are practical and immediate: Increased capital costs: Leading BIM platforms require ongoing subscriptions, which can be costly. Furthermore, hiring and training teams just adds strain on the spend. The learning curve: Teams need weeks, if not months, to feel confident in working on BIM software. Productivity usually dips during the transition. Process disruption: Shifting from 2D workflows to integrated modeling changes how everyone does their daily work. This mix of upfront investment and organizational disruption is why many firms hesitate to take the plunge, even when they know the long-term benefits are real. A smarter approach is that instead of carrying all the cost and risk in-house, many companies now collaborate with specialized BIM partners who already have the infrastructure, licenses, and expert teams in place. This allows firms to: Run pilot BIM projects without heavy capital expenditure. Access highly skilled BIM coordinators, modelers, and engineers on demand. Scale resources up or down depending on project load. Keep the focus on core business, while still delivering BIM-enabled value to clients. In short, firms don’t have to choose between “all or nothing.” Partnering strategically gives them the benefits of BIM without the bottlenecks of starting from scratch. Conclusion The truth is the reason why some companies don’t adopt the technology is rarely about whether the technology works, it’s about cost, culture, and confidence. From expensive licenses and complex training to interoperability hiccups and lack of client demand, the road to BIM can feel overwhelming. But here’s the other

BIM Benefits MEP Engineering Firms

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) firms have seen the benefit of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in their projects. BIM modeling services allow for 3D renderings of projects that incorporate all aspects of the building’s design, from the structure to the electrical and plumbing features. MEP firms work on the first stages of a building, so it is important that they’re on board from the beginning for creating space allocation and fulfilling spatial requirements for their systems and individual equipment. Once those elements are in place, the other design teams can work on other aspects of the building. There’s a three-part view when it comes to the MEP elements in a structure: MechanicalThe mechanical engineer is able to create 3D renderings of the heating and cooling system including the equipment piping design and layout of the ductwork. ElectricalThe electrical engineer can create a design showing the electrical components including the electrical and power site plans, panel schedules and distribution panels. PlumbingThe plumber is able to create a design using isometrics and riser diagrams that outlines the water plumbing and gas piping system, plus the fire protection system, such as sprinklers. It’s important for the MEP firm to be involved in the early stages of planning construction of a building. The HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems need to be in place before other elements can be added because of the complex and detailed layouts of piping, ducts and drains as well as the electrical panels. A benefit of using BIM modeling services in projects such as theses is the ability to collaborate. Each team working on a design can have access to the development of the design as well as make changes that everyone else can access. Any changes that cause conflicts within other areas of the design can be modified. For instance, if a wall is placed in front of a vent that needs to be exposed, the software will alert the designers of the conflict so that it can be changed. Conflicts such as these are extremely important to catch in the planning stages. If it was overlooked in the development phase, then when it is discovered during construction, it can cause delays and increased costs. Another benefit of building information modeling is the ability to analyze and model elements in order to create a building that’s going to have peak energy performance. BIM allows for manipulation of variables such as sunlight that comes into the building so that it can be incorporated into the heating and air system. Factoring in the sunlight that a building receives will help in determining now to efficiently heat and cool the building, which can reduce utility costs. Once the building is complete, the use of BIM modeling services by MEP will be helpful in maintenance procedures. Having access to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing designs will make repairs and future renovations easier. Indovance – Beneficial BIM Modeling Services & Engineering Outsourcing Services!
