10 Reasons to Use BIM in your projects

In this two-part series, we’ll take a look at 10 reasons to use Building Modeling Information (BIM), the process of creating digital representations of building and infrastructure projects. BIM is changing how projects are planned, designed, built and managed because of its ability to create multi-dimensional layers of information that can be modified in real-time by various team members.  It’s not just about graphics; it provides detailed information that incorporates all aspects of a project from design to construction and materials to costs and schedules. Let’s look at the first five reasons to use BIM. 1. It has innovative design principles. Architects and engineers can push the envelope with innovative building concepts because BIM takes design to the next level with sophisticated 3D functions that can create intricate graphics. It can handle complex calculations that allow for accurate information to be created and stored within the design. 3D modeling allows for realistic simulation of the building, how it will be built and how it will be managed after construction is complete. 2. It’s more advanced than 2D drawings. Basic 2D drawings are limited to lines on paper. BIM allows for 3D modeling of objects such as walls, doors and windows that are linked to information that helps determine more than just the look of the building or infrastructure. It gives measurements and other construction documentation that a 2D drawing isn’t capable of calculating. 2D drawings can be converted in 3D BIM using an outsourcing firm. Once the conversion is complete, the project can be used in managing the operations of the building. 3. It has 4D capabilities. When 4D components are added to a building’s design, more information is available for the team to review and modify. A 4D layer adds information about the project’s estimated timeline for completion, giving developers the ability to create an accurate schedule. 3D capabilities include quantity takeoff, location-based quantities, resources, productivity rates and labor costs. 4. It has 5D capabilities. When 5D is added, the cost data is incorporated into the scope of the project. This is key in planning detailed budgets, including generation of Bills of Quantities. When subcontractors are hired, they can be given a flowline schedule based on locations, quantities and crew productivity rates to ensure there won’t be stops and starts. It also includes productivity rates and labor costs. 5. It has collaborative abilities. One of the best features of BIM modeling services for project managers is the ability to collaborate within a team. Each group involved in the project, from the architect to the structural engineer to the plumber to the subcontractor, can have real-time access to the plan. If changes are made to one area of the project, the effects it may have on other areas are updated as well. BIM collaborative features  can help ensure that the focus is on achieving the best performance from the design and the best value for the budget. Don’t forget to check out the second part of this series on BIM. Benefits of 3D Printed Architectural Models

Imagine having a meeting with an investor who just can’t visualize the project plans you’re showing him. The 3D AutoCAD or BIM models can be impressive on screen because they show depth and detail, and can be viewed from various angles, but some people need more. What if you could show a model of your project that could be held and touched? With 3D printing technology, you can create 3D architectural models in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional models. Architects and real estate developers have been quick to adopt 3D technology in their project plans. They know the benefits of having a reproduction of their building or other design venture when they are pitching the idea to investors, or explaining their concept to current stakeholders. The downside has always been the time and cost involved. In the past architectural models had to be painstakingly created piece by piece. It took a lot of time, and a skilled worker to do it. With 3D printing, production time is decreased and doesn’t require someone with specialized skills. You can still create a detailed model of your building or infrastructure, but it’s much easier and has a faster turnaround. Months and months of building a model from hand carved, hand painted pieces can be replaced with a turnaround of two to three weeks. 3D printing of architectural models is also cheaper. A hand crafted model can cost over $20,000, but one that was printed using 3D technology is about a quarter of that price tag. When you want to get a realistic feel for how a building or other project will look before any construction begins, you can see it with a 3D printed model. You can add elements such as landscaping and traffic flow, plus include an overview of surrounding buildings, parking lots or other infrastructure. 3D printing isn’t limited to straight lines, either. Curved walls and rounded roofs can be printed. The models can also be printed in full color. Old models had to be painted by hand, which is a time consuming and painstaking process. Architectural models printed using 3D technology can be made of different materials, including resin, plastic and sandstone. Traditional models were made of thin balsa wood, which could be easily damaged when transported. 3D printed architectural models are often used by architects and real estate developers of residential, commercial and institutional buildings. Anyone with a desire to see their project in “real life” can benefit from using 3D printing technology to create it. Advances are still being made in this technology thanks to 3D CAD services. These will inevitably have an impact on how 3D printed architectural models are created. Time could be reduced even more, costs could be significantly less, and more options could be added. In the future printing a 3D version of your digital based projects could be as simple as pressing a button. Difference Between AutoCAD and Solidworks

Are you interested in learning more about CAD software? One of the biggest questions we hear concerns the difference between AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Many times, preference is the answer to questions like these, but with CAD software, that isn’t always the case. Below, you’ll find a description and details of the two systems. AutoCAD AutoCAD is one of the most well-known 3D CAD systems available. It offers a way to create designs that are flawless. Detailed designs are easy with use of the tools available through the software and TrustedDWG makes sharing quick and effortless, as well. Compatibility Manufactured by Autodesk Inc., AutoCAD is compatible with Mac and Windows computers. Pricing AutoCAD costs $1,680.00, which puts it $685.00 more per year than average CAD software. Intended User  Engineers Architects Industrial Designers Students Casual Users Industry               SSOE Group Shaw Industries Notable Customers Engineering Education Construction Castro Mello Architects Automotive SoildWorks Increasing productivity and rendering quality designs without error is just a few of the things this software can provide. There’s an automated system that populates most used tasks so that you’re able to streamline development and workflow. Share designs easily and define or validate form, fit and function clearly, as well. Compatibility Works well with Windows computers only. Pricing With a licensing fee of $1295 per year, this subscription is more cost effective than AutoCAD. Intended User  Engineers Industrial Designers Students Casual Users Industry               Technology Medical Manufacturing Engineering Energy Electronics Consumer Products Construction Computer Automotive Aerospace The Differences? One of the biggest differences between the software systems is that only AutoCAD is compatible with both MAC computers and Windows. SolidWorks is only able to run on Windows machines. Below, you’ll find several more ways these two are different: AutoCAD offers a free version of software for students, military veterans, school faculty and those who have worked in the CAD industry at some point in the past. The downside to the free version is that watermarks aren’t allowed. AutoCAD works only in 2D while SolidWorks deals with 3D. AutoCAD works best with electrical, mechanical and plumbing project designs. SolidWorks works great for non-architectural drawings. With the differences above, it is fairly clear that those hoping to design anything dealing with building or constructing will want to use AutoCAD. SolidWorks is better for innovations that need to be tested before production. We hope this question has been answered in a way that helps you decide which software might be best for you. If you have anything to add to this discussion, feel free to leave a comment, below! Affordable AutoCAD Outsourcing Companies | Indovance Tops Them All! Technical Drawing Careers and Responsibilities

Are you interested in learning more about technical drawings and drafters that use them? Below, you’ll find information concerning career options, responsibilities of a drafter and the various types of drafters. Technical Drawing Career Options and Facts According to work.chron.com and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2011, average annual salaries for drafters were $50,160 for architectural and civil drafters, $57,240 for electrical and electronics drafters, $52,150 for mechanical drafters and $48,370 for all other drafters. The BLS sees jobs for drafters increasing 6 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is slower than the 14 percent rate expected for all jobs in all industries. Although a growing population will need products and structures illustrated by drafters, thus increasing employment, new technology is allowing other technical professionals to perform this task, which minimizes opportunities. Mechanical drafters should see the number of jobs increase 11 percent, followed by architectural and civil specialists at 6 percent each. Technical Drawing Responsibilities Technical drawings are very specific and not seen differently by others. They follow set rules and don’t stray away from them. Intentions are clear and confusion about the drawings is avoided. Artistic renderings are subjective and open to interpretation. They’re created with that in mind. Technical drafters will draw with both traditional tools and use CAD software. The following traditional tools might be used: ruler pencil compass paper drawing table t-square many more The following professionals may need technical drawings at some point in their career: anyone who builds or creates app designers architects construction workers electricians interior designers plumbers product designers programmers teachers computer engineers CAD drafters mechanical drafters civil engineers mechanical engineers aeronautical drafters electronic specialists Want to learn more about technical drawings? What Jobs Use Technical Drawing?

Welcome back! Today, we are here to talk more about technical drawing, including what jobs use them and why! Drafters –  People that use technical drawings and can work for any type of industry, including engineering, architecture, manufacturing and more, are called drafters. While they’re tied to one field, they do have only one job – to create technical drawings. Their creations could be a single idea or attached to another, larger technical drawing. They might draw various parts of a new building or make additions to an established one. Carpenters – This profession is known for its creativity and need for design. What better way to plan and design a set of cabinets or furniture, before construction, than with technical drawings? Carpenters that aren’t able to build their own designs for whatever reason could draft their designs and then send them off for manufacturing. According to ehow.com,  a construction crew may also use the carpenter’s technical drawing during construction of the less-complex parts of the project if the carpenter is not present to supervise. Architects – This is probably one industry that uses technical drafters the most. You might wonder why, considering an architect can draw their own designs. A drafter can help draw out less specific designs of a home. Architects usually focus on the aesthetics of a home plan while drafters can help plan where objects will go in a structure. The drawings will help the owners understand the plan for the project more easily. Engineers – Engineers of all types use technical drawings, including: Civil engineers – Used to plan out and design bridges and buildings Mechanical engineers – Can create designs for machines, tools and other related objects Engineers also use technical drawings for the following reasons: Many government projects require a technical drawing of a structure be rendered before they review the overall construction process. Technical drawings also help engineers with patents of products and objects they’ve just created. Technical drawings will be used in conjunction with CAD drawings to help ensure the accuracy of the project or object being created. A 3D Printing Model Helped a Nerve Regrow

Scientists have worked up the nerve to use 3D printing technology to help make advancements in the medical field. A group of researchers from the University of Minnesota, Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University have been successful in creating new nerve tissue using a 3D printed guide that was implanted into a lab rat. After scanning the sciatic nerve of a lab rat, researchers created a model that was used to create an identical 3D printed guide. The guide acts as a pathway for the sensory and motor functions of the nerves, encouraging them to grow back. It was made of silicone and saturated with biochemical cues that trigger motor and sensory nerve growth. The researchers removed the sciatic nerve from a lab rat and surgically implanted the guide in its place. After 10-12 weeks, the nerve had regrown and the rat showed signs of improvement in its ability to walk. The scanning and printing process to create a 3D printed guide only takes about an hour, but the wait to see results can take up to 12 weeks. The experiment’s success is the doorway to more research into how to use 3D printing to create nerve guides that can help with regeneration in cases of nerve injuries. The testing has currently only been done on lab rats. More development and extensive research will have to be done in order to accurately map the larger and more complicated nerve system in a human, but scientists hope it will become a reality sooner rather than later. Researchers also hope that in the future, 3D scanners, printers and CAD drafting services will be in every hospital so that these nerve guides can be created onsite as a treatment option for someone with a nerve injury. There are currently few options in treating nerve damage. With thousands of people suffering from an injury or disease that leaves them with damage that causes chronic pain or paralyzation, there is a need for a viable treatment. Nerve grafts are complicated and can be painful. Nerve guidance chemicals use natural materials but can only be used on nerves that are in a straight line, therefore they won’t work on a nerve like the sciatic nerve. The 3D printed guides have the potential to be a better option because they encourage natural regrowth and can grow in any shape that is needed. Researchers think that they could create a “library” of nerve scans collected from other patients in order to create guides for people who have such severe damage their own nerve can’t be used as a prototype. There was research done in the past that regrew bundles of nerves in a lab, but this is the first time a complex nerve such as the sciatic nerve was recreated and regenerated. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It transmits the impulses between the central nervous system and its tissues. It’s responsible for movement and feeling in the lower body. Common Tools Used in Technical Drawings

Technical drawing is rarely done anymore, as manual drafting isn’t necessary due to CAD software. But, there are those that still draw by hand. When they do, specific tools are needed. Below, you’ll find the most helpful and popular instruments for drafters. Drawing Board – Drawing paper is placed on this board to help offer a smooth surface for working. Boards are normally 24×36 in size and serve as a workspace for drafters. Triangles – Made from transparent celluloid materials, a triangle is used to draw isometric lines. It can also be used for oblique drawings. T-square – Fashioned in the shape of the letter ‘t’ this tool is used in drawing horizontal lines. It can be used with or without the head. The lower edge of this instrument can be used as a guide for cutting while the blade can be used to measure and draw. Protractor – This tool works at an angle or degree ranging from 360 degrees down to 0. It’s made from celluloid plastic and used to plot angles on drawings. Drawing Pencil – Coming in various types and classifications, the drawing pencil is used to sketch drafts. The hardness of the lead differs depending on the type of pencil. Technical Pencil – Used to sketch a final draft, this pencil is capable of drawing the finest line possible from the smallest pin calibration. French Curve – You can draw an irregular, curved shape easily with this instrument. Those that need various geometric curves will find this tool useful. Scale – Used for measuring, the scale is great for helping with enlarging or reducing a measurement for drawings. The scale can use feet and inches, as well as metric and English calibration systems. Template – With different shapes, holes and other patterns, this tool ensures you’re able to project drawings in different shapes without error. Compass – Used to draw circles accurately, this instrument can be used on base drawings in projecting lines. It will also draw arcs, as well. Eraser – Remove unwanted marks on the drawing paper with this rubber tool. Drafting Tape – In order to prevent drawing paper from moving on the drawing board, you need drafting tape. It fastens the paper to the board and can be removed easily without harming the drafts. Do you use any of these tools to help you in your drafting efforts? If so, which tools are your favorite? Do you have any other instruments that aren’t listed here?
